Nephrology is the branch of medicine that deals with diseases of the kidney and kidney failure. It involves the study and management of people with chronic kidney diseases such as nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis and with kidney failure. It also encompasses the treatment of kidney failure, either by means of haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or kidney transplantation. It is sometimes known as renal medicine.
The national renal transplant unit is based at CHI at Temple Street and conducts kidney transplants on children from all over the country under 16 years of age. Some of these children receive their new kidney from a living donor (a relative or friend) and some from a deceased donor (when the kidney is retrieved from someone who has died but who carried an organ donor card.)
CHI at Temple Street is also the national paediatric haemodialysis centre where children attend for dialysis three times a week from all over the country for periods from six months to five years whilst waiting for a kidney. Each time they attend the hospital they spend three hours on a machine losing precious days of family, home and school life.

CHI at Temple Street continues to encourage people to carry a donor card and make the greatest possible act of generosity by giving a gift of life.
