Special precautions / Clinical Comment	Please use PDA to label form and sample. In the event of an emergency where there is no time to wait for crossmatch compatible blood, emergency Group O Rh D Negative blood (less than 10 day old neonatal units) are available for use. In an emergency situation, crossmatch compatible blood could be available within 40-60 mins provided there are no antibodies or serological complications. Routine pre-ops should be received in the laboratory by 14:00 prior to the day of surgery Turnaround times assume that the patient has no special requirements (e.g. < 5 day old blood or irradiated red cells or pedipacks which are ordered from the IBTS Two blood groups (ideally taken 12 hours apart*) are required before the patient is issued group specific blood. If the patient has a historical group on record (from a previous admission) then one group will suffice for crossmatching. If it is not possible to obtain two groups, the patient will have O Rh D Negative blood issued. Our aim is that all patients prior to transfusion have two blood groups on record to ensure patient safety & reduce the demand on our O Rh D negative blood supply. *If the patient requires a transfusion with only one sample on record, a second sample can be taken by a different sample taker, if the samples are taken less than 12 hours apart.
