What is Music Therapy?
Music Therapy is an evidence- based profession that uses music to help patients reach health goals. Music Therapists have specialised Masters level training in the application of music to the therapeutic process. There is a large evidence base which supports the role of Music Therapy in acute paediatric care. Music Therapists are primarily concerned with the emotional needs of the child and offer support to children and their families during the hospital admission. They use their music and therapeutic skill to help children work towards emotional, social, physical and cognitive goals.
Music Therapists work as part of the multidisciplinary team and work both independently and jointly with Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Psychologists when deemed beneficial for the child. Sessions are family centred and focus on providing a creative way for the child to express their experience of illness, trauma and treatment. A typical session might include singing, music listening, clinical improvisation, song writing and/or musical play. No previous musical skill or knowledge is required by the child.
