The Top Flat Ward, also known as St Joseph’s Ward is a 22 bedded ward that was significantly upgraded in late 2013. Over 1,900 children are admitted to the Top Flat Ward every year.

The newly refurbished ward has been redeveloped into a mix of four and two bedded units with four single isolation rooms. The four isolation rooms have been fitted with an air-pressurised controlled environment, essential for the treatment of patients vulnerable to infection, especially cystic fibrosis patients. One of the single rooms is also fitted out to monitor children with uncontrolled epilepsy.

The Top Flat refurbishment also included the installation of a patient entertainment system fitted at each bed space and a satellite schoolroom was added to the new Ward which facilitates patients from other wards in the hospital who cannot access the hospital’s main schoolroom

The patient entertainment system comes from an Irish company called Lincor Solutions and allows patients to watch digital television, listen to radio and play games consoles such as Play station and X-Box via a specially designed touch screen device, giving each patient individual control over what they watch. Plans are in place to add new services such as movies on demand, internet access, video calling, patient information and patient surveys in the coming months.
