Launch of New Paediatric Trauma Resource

Children’s Health Ireland and Dublin Fire Brigade have launched a key video resource for professionals involved in paediatric trauma work. Paediatric healthcare in Ireland is undergoing significant change with the reconfiguration of services and the building of the new children’s hospital, which will be the location of Ireland’s Major Paediatric Trauma Centre.
The video resource, ‘Roadside to Resus’, was developed illustrating the resuscitation of a critically injured child; from pre-hospital to the trauma room. The simulation is an example of services working together through an application of guidelines to deliver a gold standard in trauma education for healthcare workers and frontline service providers.
One in 20 major traumas in Ireland is paediatric. As per the Major Trauma Audit Paediatric Report 2014-2019, road trauma is a major cause of death and disability in children and was the most common single mechanism of injury leading to death in paediatric major trauma patients during this period. Paediatric trauma represents a significant childhood burden of mortality and morbidity in Ireland. The consequences of major trauma on children can be far reaching with many suffering life changing or life threatening injuries.
Dr Nuala Quinn (pictured), Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultant in CHI at Temple Street, spent years of training in Melbourne, Australia, fuelling her interest in the area of trauma education. “Treatment of paediatric trauma begins the moment the trauma happens. It involves a concerted team effort across emergency services and clearly allocated roles and responsibilities is crucial to favourable outcomes for a patient. We can change outcomes with education. We want this video resource to be a useful tool for anyone working in frontline service or as a trauma healthcare provider. “
“With the building of the new children’s hospital and strategic planning of a future paediatric major trauma network, we really have a fantastic opportunity to align with and even lead-on the gold-standard internationally for paediatric trauma care.”
“We are delighted with the outcome of this video and thank the Dublin Fire Brigade for always working so closely and well with us here at Children’s Health Ireland.”
Paul Lambert, District Officer Dublin Fire Brigade, said, “Services working together when attending a trauma call-out is not a new concept but interprofessional education really helps streamline our approach to paediatric trauma care delivery. Early attendance of Advanced Paramedics can also influence better outcomes. It’s very difficult for anyone to attend a scene where a child has been injured or hurt – preparing for those situations can really help with efficient and prompt delivery of care, ensuring the best possible outcome for the child involved.”
