Our teams work together to provide care for children with infections or children who have underlying conditions that make them susceptible to infection.

The Paediatric Infectious Diseases team at CHI at Crumlin and Temple Street treat children with infections like
sepsis
pneumonia
meningitis
hospital acquired infections
imported infections like TB and malaria.
We work with maternity hospitals to prevent infections passed from mother to infant such as
HIV
syphilis
cytomegalovirus (CMV)
toxoplasmosis
We provide advice to GPs and regional hospitals.
We also offer an outpatient antibiotic therapy service to help children leave the hospital sooner.
Paediatric Immunology department
The Paediatric Immunology department specialises in diagnosing and caring for children who have inborn errors of immunity (IEI).
These children can present with severe or recurrent infections, autoimmunity, autoinflammatory disease, severe allergy, and malignancy. We are the national centre of referral for IEI and take referrals primarily from other paediatricians who suspect IEI.
Our department treats a wide range of conditions, including:
severe bacterial and viral infections, such as sepsis, meningitis, and pneumonia.
bone and joint infections.
infections in children with compromised immune systems, such as children receiving chemotherapy.
intra-abdominal infections.
hospital-acquired infections, such as Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) and Catheter and Line Associated Bloodstream infections (CLABSI).
infections in children who have had surgery.
skin and soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis, recurrent boils, and recurrent Herpes Simplex Virus (cold sores).
kawasaki disease, prolonged fever of unknown origin (PUO), and Inflammatory syndrome post COVID-19 infection (PIMS-TS).
human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
hepatitis B & C Virus.
congenital infections, including syphilis, CMV, and toxoplasmosis.
tropical infections, including malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, and other travel-related and imported infections.
tuberculosis and Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM).

We work closely with all departments of CHI at Crumlin and Temple Street to provide in-patient consultations. We also provide telephone advice to all Regional Paediatric units.
We collaborate with the CHI Department of Microbiology, as well as the CHI Departments of Inclusion Health and Global Health. Additionally, we support antimicrobial stewardship through the Department of Pharmacy.
