Top Flat Ward

The Top Flat Ward is a 22-bedded unit for the treatment of patients vulnerable to infection.

During your child’s stay with us you’ll have access to our:

  • play specialist
  • social work team
  • hospital chapel
  • parent’s room

There are also entertainment systems in the Top Flat Ward come from an Irish company called Lincor Solutions and allow patients to watch digital television, listen to the radio and play games consoles such as Play station and X-Box via a specially designed touchscreen device, giving each patient individual control over what they watch.

Meal times

Meals will be served at your child’s bedside for:

  • breakfast, at 8:30am
  • dinner, at 12:30pm
  • tea time, at 4:15pm
  • supper, at 8:30pm

Prescription diets, halal and vegetarian meals are available on request.

The ward has been redeveloped into a mix of 4 and 2-bedded units with 4 single isolation rooms. The 4 isolation rooms have been fitted with an air-pressurised controlled environment, essential for the treatment of patients vulnerable to infection, especially cystic fibrosis patients. One of the single rooms is also fitted out to monitor children with uncontrolled epilepsy.

The Top Flat refurbishment also included installing a patient entertainment system fitted at each bed space.

A satellite schoolroom was added to the ward, which facilitates patients from other wards in the hospital who cannot access the hospital’s main schoolroom.

If you are likely to be hospitalised for two weeks or more, you can get a discounted parking ticket from the main reception. This allows you to exit from the car parks for 14 consecutive days from the day you validate the ticket.
